Ingrown Toenails

If you are experiencing redness, pain, or swelling around your toenail, you may be suffering from a common condition called an ingrown toenail. It can cause an infection in your toe if left untreated. This infection can also lead to foot ulcers or open sores and a loss of blood flow to the infected area. Causes of Ingrown Toenails

Many things can cause an ingrown toenail, including:

Improperly fitting shoes
Genetic nail shape
Trimming of nail
Toenail injury

Permanent Surgical Correction of Ingrown toenails

At the Harwood Foot Clinic, we provide a permanent solution for ingrown toenails. This involves a procedure performed in the office. A local anesthetic is applied to the toe, and the edge of the nail is later cut and removed (known as a partial nail avulsion). A chemical is then applied to the root of the nail so that only the ingrown portion of the nail no longer grows back. This procedure is not painful and is highly successful.
